Industry Rules had the opportunity to sit down with world-renowned health and wellness expert, Dr. Lionel Bissoon. Dr. B, as his patients fondly call him, specializes in preventive medicine for overall health, vitality and vigor. We discussed metabolic function and optimizing hormones like testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, stomach issues and sleeplessness. In full disclosure, Dr. B has been treating a friend of mine for almost 10 years and has helped her with many different health challenges such as mercury and metals poisoning, weight loss and fertility. She will never see another doctor and entrusts him with her life.

IR: I frequently visit doctors but I’m not sure how many doctors can say that people come from all over the world to see them and really be truthful about that statement. Why do people literally come from near and far to see you for your services?

Dr B: I think the difference is that after an initial consultation, each patient receives a unique and customized regimen for their special needs and goals. With the idea that no two people are alike nor age the same, my goal is to reverse the signs of aging both externally and internally with an inside out approach: look younger, feel younger. The focus on preventive medicine and alternative treatment programs doesn’t require the use of drugs and instead provides long-term sustainable, healthy and very tangible results for my patients.

IR: We all agree the key for a program to be successful is to be sustainable for the long-term. How do you diagnose a patient with stomach issues?

Dr B: Gut health is a primary factor and certainly one of the first things I address with patients during their first consultation. All too often, I see patients who assume that certain stomach related processes such as constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloat and flatulence are just their normal. When in fact, these symptoms can indicate just the opposite and can also be related to other symptoms such as fatigue, decreased energy, decreased focus, decreased concentration, weight gain and daytime somnolence. I consider gut health as one of the most important things to address as it can and will affect our entire health and wellness. The gut is often referred to as the second brain. In summary, everything which goes into your mouth must go through the gut before going through the body. Thus, the key to wellness, anti-aging and prevention is to address gut issues first.

When patients present just one of these symptoms, we perform studies and do extensive evaluations for parasites, inflammation, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), food allergies, stomach acid overproduction or underproduction and nutritional malabsorption. Diagnosing any of these gastrointestinal issues can immediately change a patient’s health in a matter of just a few weeks. Treatment can have profound improvement in overall quality of life such as increased energy, increased focus and concentration, improved sleep quality and more mental clarity.

IR: So you are saying that there is significance importance of a healthy gut?

Dr. B: Yes! Patients can do all the right things such as good nutrition, avoiding processed foods, exercise, sleep and supplementation but if the gut is not working properly, the hard work will not be fruitful. We can take a handful of supplements every day, but if our stomach cannot digest all the good things we consume, then we are wasting our time and money. Patients often say that they never realized how bad they felt until their gut issue was resolved. Gut issues are very common and there are many simple nutritional solutions for many of these ailments.

IR: How important is hormonal balance/hormone replacement for women? What is the negative if left untreated?

Dr B: Most women see a rapid decline in bone density throughout menopause and also suffer with other menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, memory loss, mood swings, decreased libido, weight gain and even depression. By restoring hormone imbalances with bio identical hormone replacement therapy, we can reverse these symptoms and restore both mental and physical quality of life.

IR: How important is testosterone replacement for men? What are some of the side effects if neglected?

Dr B: Like women, men’s hormones decline with age. Most often what I hear from my male patients is that they feel they are “not on their game.” Other symptoms include decreased focus, increase in belly fat and decreased sex drive. Hormone replacement in men, like women, can restore these imbalances. What is most important to remember is that for both men and women, this is not a one size fits all solution. Lab work is required every three months once you are on hormone replacement therapy to make sure the hormones are balanced or need to be adjusted.

What we are really striving for is for the patient to be disease resistant, mentally sharp, physically fit and maintain high self-esteem, so that they can live well. Anti-aging medicine may not be able to reverse aging or extend longevity, but our hormone replacement treatments are able to address age related physical, mental and sexual problems and enhance one’s quality of life.

IR: What else can we expect to see in the future of preventative medicine?

Dr B: I have been studying and utilizing precision medicine through genetic testing in my practice for over two years. The information we can learn through a patient’s genetic makeup is invaluable.

Genetic testing is often the first step towards finding solutions for rare or complex conditions. So many patients seek this testing that it is now a large part of our practice and for good reason, certain genetic abnormalities can be the culprit behind innumerable illnesses. Genetic screening could actually detect more cancers compared to traditional methods, increasing life expectancies and decreasing overall costs. By looking at an individual’s nutrigenomics, I can guide my patient’s with personalized nutrition and address other issues related to how they cope with stress or even depression naturally through supplementation.

In addition, this information also provides the patient with what medications are most effective and which are to be absolutely avoided based on their individual genetic results. This information can be life changing but more importantly, lifesaving.

IR: Many people today have unsettling sleep patterns. Any suggestions on how we can fall asleep and stay in a resting state when it is at times, hard to “shut off.”

Dr. B.: All computers, T.V.’s, iPads and smartphones emit blue light from their screens. It is proven that this blue light kills the melatonin needed to fall asleep and STAY asleep. Many busy executives that come to me that can’t sleep think they are reducing stress by answering emails, responding to texts and reading on their iPads and computers – however, this has the opposite effect and suppresses the melatonin. Even if you are tired, this makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. I recommend the following to all my patients:

– One hour before bed, stop reading emails, answering text messages and reading on the computer. End all device use at least one hour prior to bedtime (read a hard copy book; newspaper and relax).
– Put your phone face down on the nightstand or keep it in a drawer on silent.
– Use – a free app to limit blue light or on an iPhone use the new “night” setting that dims the blue light.
– If you wake in the middle of the night, resist the urge to check your phone as it makes it harder to fall back to sleep as the blue light suspends the melatonin.
– Many chargers for computer devices emit blue light. Keep those chargers and the devices out of the bedroom.
