enCourage Kids Foundation: Serving Up Smiles

New York City played host to an extraordinary evening as the enCourage Kids Foundation (EKF) celebrated its 40th anniversary with the annual Serving Up Smiles fundraiser. More than a showcase of gourmet cuisine, the event highlighted EKF’s enduring mission: bringing comfort, joy, and emotional support to children in hospitals nationwide.

Jean Butler, EKF’s CEO, reflected on the evening’s unique energy. “This year’s Serving Up Smiles was truly remarkable,” she said. “We were excited to welcome new partners like One if by Land, Two if by Sea, Loi Estiatorio, and Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, alongside our cherished returning collaborators. Every chef, restaurant, and beverage partner contributed their time and talent to make the night unforgettable.”

Celebrity guests added to the vibrancy of the event. Elvis Duran’s team from iHeartMedia — Skeery Jones, Danielle Monaro, and Gandhi — joined the celebration, lending their charisma to raise essential funds for pediatric patients.

The evening reinforced EKF’s dedication to programs that have been at the core of its mission for decades: Send a SmileSend a Bear, and the Pediatric Hospital Support Program (PHSP), which together impact over 300 hospital partners across the country. “The funds raised make a tangible difference,” Butler explained. “They allow us to provide comforting EKF Bears, support Pet and Music Therapy programs, and fund Grief Therapy initiatives. Each dollar helps transform hospital stays from intimidating experiences to hopeful ones for children facing serious medical challenges.”

A highlight of the night was the debut of the Culinary Community Champion Award, created to recognize chefs and restaurateurs who exemplify generosity and social commitment. The first recipient, Mike Puma, owner and chef of Gotham Burger Social Club, was celebrated for his ongoing support and compassionate approach to helping children. “I’m so honored to be recognized for my work outside of the restaurant,” Puma said. “I’m beyond grateful to MJ Pedone for nominating me and for the organization to believe in me.” “Mike’s dedication and humility embody the spirit of this award,” Butler added.

Guests at Serving Up Smiles experienced more than just exceptional cuisine. World-class dishes, fine wines, and handcrafted cocktails were paired with entertainment from DJ Chef and mentalist Matias — all in service of a higher purpose. “It’s a lively event with heart, which is what sets it apart,” Butler noted.

Curating the culinary lineup is a thoughtful process. Butler emphasized the balance between familiar favorites and fresh talent to provide a diverse tasting experience while keeping the focus on EKF’s mission. “Our returning partners demonstrate ongoing belief in our work, while new chefs bring exciting flavors that delight guests. The combination is always intentional,” she said.

Looking forward, Butler shared EKF’s plans for growth in 2026: expanding hospital partnerships, developing new programs, and scaling the national Mental Health Program to ensure every hospitalized child has access to comfort and joy. She also stressed the importance of public engagement. “We welcome individuals and companies to volunteer, donate, or partner with us. Awareness and collaboration amplify our impact,” she said.

As the evening concluded, the success of Serving Up Smiles was evident not just in funds raised, but in the atmosphere of generosity, joy, and shared purpose. For four decades, the enCourage Kids Foundation has demonstrated that healing extends beyond medicine — it begins with compassion, kindness, and moments of happiness.
